Karel Appel | 1921 - 2006

Appel was co-founder of CoBrA on november 8 1948. Probably, he is the most famous member of the movement. He became renowned by his credo "I am just disarranging, fooling around". In 1953 his work was exhibited at the Biënnale of Sao Paulo and in the same year he had his first large solo exhibition. In 1954 He received solo exhibitions in Paris and New York and marked the start of his international career. "I paint like a barbarian in barbarian times."

In Cobra Café "Close Together No. A.P." is displayed behind the bar. This wooden sculpture is designed by Karel Appel. Funny detail is that you can turn the sculpture around it's axis.
