Corneille was born as Guillaume Corneille van Beverloo in Luik (Liège), Belgium. His parents are Dutch. In 1940 Corneille moved to Amsterdam where he started a sketching and etching course at the Arts Academy. As a painter he is an autodidact.
His big source of inspiration were his travels to far countries. In his early work in the 50-ies you can see and feel Africa. Late 50-ies, early 60-ies Central America and the Caribbean islands influenced his work and resulted into a more and brighter use of color.
